Synopsis

Kate is a newlywed arriving in Galveston for the very first time with her husband, Ben. Ben’s brother and sister-in-law live in town, and Kate is about to embark on a brand-new life there. Coming from Baltimore and wearing affluent clothing, she’s worried she won’t fit in. She’s timid and shy and lacks confidence, knowledge, and experience in life (and the bedroom).
It isn’t long until she makes firm friends with Ben’s family, fits in with the locals, starts to grow in confidence, and gives birth to baby Douglas. Ben is a doctor in the local hospital, and when yellow fever starts to sweep the area, Ben contracts it and tragically dies, leaving Kate to bring up Douglas as a lone widow.
Although devastated, Kate works hard to live up to her promise to Ben on his deathbed – that she’d stay strong and, one day, find love again. With support from Ben’s family, she strives to be a wonderful mother to Douglas and finds local work to support herself financially. She goes on many dates, but no one matches up to Ben, and she gives up hope of finding love. That is until she runs into a handsome ship worker, Jonathan.
Jonathan can’t get Kate off his mind from the minute he lays eyes on her at Galveston docks. After a few chances (and not so chance) meetings, the two begin to spend more time together and eventually realize they are in love and want to be a couple. Jonathan is wonderful with Douglas; life finally feels like it’s falling into place for Kate as happiness envelops her.
Then one morning, Jonathan heads to work in the local store. A storm is forecasted, but most people aren’t that worried. They’re used to showers, and they could do with the rain. But then catastrophe hits the town when the most horrific storm hits, destroying property and taking many lives. Kate, Jonathan, and Douglas work hard to stay together and survive the storm, making their way to safety at a house on high ground. Kate and Douglas make it, but Jonathan hangs back to help save the lives of others and gets washed out by a huge wave.
Kate is devastated once again to lose the second love of her life and has no choice but to stay with her son and keep him safe. She has lost Jonathan. Her home is destroyed, and it seems that all is lost.
But then, a local nun saves Jonathan, who is still alive. Kate and Jonathan search for each other before being reunited. Jonathan proposes to Kate, and they look forward with excitement and uncertainty to a new future.
